1/ What Can Acupuncture Help With in Older Adults?

Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can support a wide range of issues that become more common with age, including:

chronic pain:

arthritis, back/ hip/ knee pain, neck/ shoulder stiffness)

poor sleep

frequent waking, waking too early, light sleep, dream disturbed sleep

digestive concerns:

constipation, slow digestion, loose stools, frequent motions

low energy:

fatigue, lethargy, dips in energy throughout the day

brain fog:

poor memory, issues with balance, lack of recall

emotional concerns:

low moods, anxiety, feelings of loneliness

Our priority is to help you feel well, comfortable, and able as you age; allowing you to engage with life in a more fulfilling and meaningful way.

2/ Is Acupuncture Safe for Older Persons?

The short answer is, absolutely! Acupuncture is a safe and gentle modality, especially when performed by qualified and registered practitioners.

All our practitioners at Pack Health are degree-qualified, nationally registered, and members of the leading Chinese Medicine association in Australia.

When it comes to treating older patients we adapt every treatment to suit the individual. This includes:

➤ using ultra-fine pins

➤ adjusting therapeutic techniques for patients on blood thinners

➤ providing heated and electric treatment beds for easy access

➤ offering gentle, low-stimulation treatments when energy is low

3/ How Does Chinese Medicine View Aging?

In Chinese Medicine, aging isn’t seen as a disease, it’s embraced for the natural process it is. As we get older, some of the body’s foundational energies (especially Kidney Qi and Yang) begin to decline.

This can lead to:

➤ cold hands and feet

➤ weak or aching joints

➤ slower healing after injury or illness

➤ frequent waking in the night

➤ a sense of heaviness, fogginess, or emotional flatness

Acupuncture can help to restore circulation, support digestion, calm the nervous system and reduce inflammation. This allows your body to function more effortlessly, even as it slows down.

4/ How Long Does It Take to See Results?

Many of our older patients feel a shift after a few sessions. This can look like:

➤ less stiffness in the mornings

➤ sleeping through the night

➤ more ease in their bowel movements

➤ feeling more connected with their body again

For long-term or complex issues, we usually suggest a series of sessions to build momentum. Each session builds on the foundation set by the previous one. Over time, as symptoms start to improve and hold, you will be able to space out your treatments.

The goal is to get you to a stage where you are managing effortlessly on your own, then you can pop in time-to-time for a "tune-up" to make sure things stay that way!
