ACUPUNCTURE FOR BACK PAIN
Back pain can stop you doing a lot more than bending over comfortably.
Whether it started last week or has been hanging around for years, we take the time to understand what hurts, what aggravates it, how it affects the way you move, and what may be keeping it around.
Our Everton Hills clinic provides individualised acupuncture treatment for back pain, injury, and musculoskeletal conditions.
BACK PAIN ISN'T ONE THING
It might be the ache that builds after sitting at your desk all day. A back that seizes every few months for seemingly no reason. Pain that started after lifting, training, or an injury. Stiffness first thing in the morning. Or pain that travels into your hip or leg. And sometimes you've had it for so long that you've simply learnt to work around it.
That's why we don't treat “back pain” as a protocol. We want to know your back pain: when it started, where you feel it, what makes it better or worse, how you move, what you've already tried, and what you'd like to get back to doing.
CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP WITH MY BACK PAIN?
Acupuncture is commonly used as part of the management of musculoskeletal pain, including low back pain.
Treatment involves the insertion of very fine needles at carefully selected points. Depending on your presentation, we may use local acupuncture around the painful area, points elsewhere in the body, electroacupuncture or techniques targeting involved muscles.
But the needles are only part of the appointment. Before we treat you, we want to understand why your back is bothering you in the first place.
FIRST, WE ASSESS.
Your initial appointment starts with a proper conversation and physical assessment.
We'll talk about how the pain began, how it behaves, previous injuries, your work, training and day-to-day movement. Where appropriate, we'll assess your range of movement, muscles and joints and use orthopaedic testing to help us understand what may be contributing.
Then we treat what we find.
Depending on your presentation, your treatment may include acupuncture, electroacupuncture, motor and trigger point techniques, cupping, and other Chinese Medicine approaches.
You won't necessarily receive all of them. And you won't receive the same treatment as the person with back pain who came in before you.
TWO BACKS.
TWO DIFFERENT TREATMENTS.
Two people can point to exactly the same spot on their lower back and be experiencing two very different problems.
One might have pain after increasing their training load. Another might have persistent stiffness after years at a desk. Someone else may have nerve irritation, an old injury that keeps flaring or muscular tension that's developed around another issue.
Same location. Different story.
That's why we don't have a standard set of “back pain points”. We treat the person, not the condition.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Your first acupuncture appointment is 60 minutes.
That gives us time to talk through what's happening, assess your movement where appropriate, explain what we've found and provide treatment during the same appointment.
Afterwards, we'll talk about what makes sense from there.
Some problems may only need a small number of treatments. Others, particularly persistent or complex pain, may need more time.
We're not interested in locking everyone into the same treatment schedule. Your plan should make sense for you.
YOUR BACK PAIN HAS BEEN CALLING THE SHOTS FOR LONG ENOUGH.
If your pain is getting in the way of work, training, sleep or simply moving comfortably, come and have it properly assessed.
