ACUPUNCTURE & CHINESE MEDICINE FOR DIGESTIVE HEALTH

Bloating, IBS and digestive concerns | Everton Hills, Brisbane

Some digestive problems are obvious.

Others are the kind you quietly organise your whole day around.

Maybe you're comfortable when you wake up and noticeably bloated by dinner. You're never quite sure whether today's going to be a constipation day or the complete opposite. Certain meals seem to set everything off, while the exact same food can be perfectly fine another time.

Or perhaps you've already been investigated, you've been told you have IBS, and you're looking for another way to manage symptoms that are still getting in the way.

At Pack Health in Everton Hills, we use acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine as part of an individualised approach to digestive health.

WHEN YOUR DIGESTION STARTS RUNNING THE SHOW

Digestive symptoms have an annoying habit of affecting far more than digestion.

What you eat.

When you eat.

What you wear.

Where you're going.

Whether there's a bathroom nearby.

Whether going out for dinner sounds enjoyable or like a logistical exercise.

Symptoms can include bloating, abdominal discomfort, constipation, loose stools, alternating bowel habits, indigestion, nausea, early fullness after eating or a digestive system that simply feels unpredictable.

And although those symptoms can look similar on paper, what is actually happening can vary enormously from person to person.

BLOATED DOESN'T NECESSARILY MEAN THE SAME THING

Two people can walk into the clinic and say:

“I'm bloated.”

One feels reasonably comfortable in the morning but becomes increasingly distended after eating. They're tired after meals and tend towards loose stools.

Another is constipated, feels tight through the abdomen and notices everything becomes noticeably worse when they're stressed.

Same complaint.

Very different picture.

That's why we don't work from a standard “bloating protocol”.

We want to know when symptoms happen, what changes them, what your bowel habits are doing, how you tolerate food and what else is happening alongside them.

CAN ACUPUNCTURE HELP WITH IBS?

Irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS, is a disorder of gut-brain interaction characterised by recurrent abdominal pain alongside changes in bowel habits such as constipation, diarrhoea or both.

Research into acupuncture for IBS has developed considerably.

A 2026 systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials found that acupuncture improved overall IBS response rates and symptom severity compared with sham acupuncture. The researchers also noted significant variation between the included studies, so further high-quality research is still needed.

Other clinical trials have similarly investigated acupuncture as an adjunct to usual medical care for persistent IBS symptoms.

Individual responses vary, and acupuncture doesn't replace appropriate medical assessment or management of IBS.

WHAT ABOUT INDIGESTION, FULLNESS & UPPER DIGESTIVE SYMPTOMS?

Some digestive symptoms sit higher up.

You might feel uncomfortably full after eating, become full unusually quickly, experience upper abdominal discomfort or simply feel as though meals sit heavily.

When these symptoms persist without an identified structural cause, they may sometimes be diagnosed as functional dyspepsia.

Research in this area is promising. A 2026 systematic review of 23 randomised trials found that acupuncture probably improves functional-dyspepsia symptoms and quality of life compared with sham acupuncture, no treatment or usual care.

As always, persistent or unexplained upper gastrointestinal symptoms should be appropriately investigated before assuming they're functional.

HOW CHINESE MEDICINE LOOKS AT DIGESTION

Chinese Medicine doesn't begin and end with the symptom written on the booking form.

If you've booked because you're bloated, Jin may also ask about your appetite, bowel habits, what happens after meals, temperature preferences, thirst, energy, sleep, stress, menstrual cycle and the timing and character of your symptoms.

Some of those questions might initially seem unrelated.

They're not.

They help build a picture of how your digestive system is behaving and how that fits within your broader Chinese Medicine presentation.

That assessment then guides treatment rather than everybody with constipation, IBS or bloating receiving exactly the same thing.
